Today the New York State Senate voted in favor of Senate Bill S1707A in an effort to legalize Mixed Martial Arts in the Empire State.
It is a small victory for those who seek out legalization in one of the last remaining states where regulation is currently not in place.
While the state senate may have just voted 42-18 in favor of the bill it still needs to pass the New York State Assembly in order to be legalized.
Assembly bill A04146 has been on the table since February however it has remained completely inactive. To this point a vote on the bill has yet to be scheduled and one of the leaders in the campaign to keep the sport out of New York is none other than state assemblymen Bob Reilly who has effectively led the campaign to stop the UFC from entering the state.
Reilly even went as far as to use his position against MMA to successfully garner 51% of the vote in his race for reelection in District 109. Some say that as long as Reilly is in office this bill will not pass the state assembly and his term is not up until 2013.
One small step was made in the seemingly never ending battle to get MMA into New York today, but don’t expect a miracle over night. There is still a long road ahead of us.
Dana White today via twitter stated “Finally, NY!!!” Let’s just hope he is right and we can get the bill through the Assembly with relative ease.
